A Matter of Britain
Apothecaries and Herbalists
I quite like the idea of being able to have someone “on staff” who can prepare certain concoctions to encourage healthy pregnancy or prevent unwanted pregnancies. So I’m going to say that if you have an apothecary or herbalist in your entourage, you can add or subtract a roll of 1d6 to a childbirth roll in your household each year. In other words, you could theoretically use the d6 roll to bump a “mother and child die” result up to “child born” or down to “no conception” and so forth.
The apothecary costs an extra libra to maintain because he’s a potion brewer. The rules don’t explicitly state it, but I’m going to say that if you have an apothecary, you can forgo the +/-1d6 childbirth modifier to instead roll on the Potion Table (found in the Book of Knights and Ladies) to have him produce a random potion for you.
